After the sad plane crash and death of Buddy Holly and his friends in 1959, the car was rarely driven. The trace of the car was somewhat lost until the 1980s when the car found a new home in Germany. A well-known businessman and passionate Mercedes-Benz enthusiast in Mercedes-Benz classic circles had bought the car. A club friend had helped him to import the vehicle to Germany. He kept the car in his possession for a few years and sold it in 1990 to an entrepreneur in the very north of Germany. The new owner had clear ideas about how he would particularly like the 300 SL and enforced these ideas as part of an extensive revision of the car. The body was separated from the frame and revised piece by piece to a high standard. Blue is the color of the sea and blue is welcome on the North Sea and Baltic Sea.
